Howard's End CSA Farm

2011 Season Complete Grow List

Everything that we are planting or producing for the 2011 season

Last year we fell far short of our growing goals.  We had to spend most of our time building beds and improving the soil.  This year, our herb garden plans are a go and since it is a large garden (over 2,500 square feet) we will be able to grow a broad range of herbs and flowers.

Herbs:   Basil, Marjoram, Dill, Summer Savory, Summer Thyme, French Thyme, Lavender, Root Parsley,

Borage, Watercress, Fennel, Sage, Chervil, Purly Chives, Chinese Leeks, Leaf Parsley

Rosemary, Greek Oregano, Santo Cilantro, French Sorrel, Erba Stella, Valeriana, Mints,

Lemon Verbena, Ginger, Bee Balm,  Chamomile, Hyssop, Stevia, Tarragon, Sweet Woodruff,

              and Lemongrass

As for the fruits, most won't be available this year.  They've been planted and are doing well, but it will take a few more years before production starts.  In the meantime, we will be managing a small orchard which belongs to one of our members so that we can offer organic apples, pears, concord grapes and apple cider.

Fruits:    Bartlett and Bosc Pears, European and Japanese Plum varieties, Montmorency Cherries

Figs, white and red table Grapes

Berries:  Earliglow Strawberries, Red and Black Raspberries, Blackberries,  Elderberries

              Huckleberries, Ground Cherries

Wild: Fiddlehead Ferns, Ramps (harvesting these, not planting them), Nettles

As for the mushrooms, this will be out first year.  I'm not certain we will be successful with all of them but these are the ones we will be cultivating. We are also going to try Black Morels, but they won't fruit until the spring of 2012 if we are successful.

Mushrooms:   Shiitake, Oyster, Pioppino, Golden, Lion's Mane, Trumpet Oyster, Hen-of-the-woods,

                        Chicken-of-the-woods, Parasol

Corn: We are going to try Black Aztec which was grown in this country by the Iroquois.

Most of our vegetables will be heirloom varieties though there are some hybrids.  We will never use any GMO seed however.  I would love to list all of the variety but the list would become unmanageable.
